Lindos Spotlight : Dimitris Sarikakis

How wild parties and flunking medical school improved Dimitris linguistic skills!

Lindos born and bred, Dimitris is a familiar face to regular Lindos visitors but you may not have enjoyed his delightful little cantina.  Backed by terraces, where he grows his own vegetables, herbs and fruit which he uses in his kitchen, Dimitris has turned this little cove into an oasis of calm and pleasure.  And if you manage to catch your own fish, he will happily barbecue it for you once he has taught you what kind of fish it is!  The Exclusively Lindos team took themselves down there for a lazy lunch to catch up with him and enjoy his unique insights into the future of Rhodes and of course, his village's life over the years...........

Dimitris, we remember you from the good (and hazy) old days of the Acropolis Disco!

Yes!  From 1977 I worked there, from barman to the boss.  What days they were.   Acropolis Disco was so successful and thousands and thousands of people have danced the night away there. Acropolis Disco was as famous as its ancient namesake and anybody who was here in the 80s and 90s still talk about the best nights of their lives in this iconic venue.

Don't you miss those times?

Yes, and no.  I am talking about the days when huge groups of people would come to Lindos from all over the world, year after year.  Parties of pilots, air stewardess, artists, writers, poets, such interesting fun loving people. Lindos makes an impression on many hearts and so many still come back year after year and have become good friends.

You speak fluent Italian.  Is this because you have made so many Italian friends?

Well no, I lived in Italy and studied to become a doctor but the girls on the Architecture course were much better looking so I didn't finish my medical studies....!

And your excellent English - dare we ask how you learned that?

From the hippies of course!  Lindos was full of British hippies in the late 60's.  We had such laughs, such wild times (the next bit was censored!).   There was no accommodation in Lindos then, and not many permanent residents.  All these artists and poets would sleep on the beach!  Slowly the owners began to rent out little rooms in their houses and so began the story of Lindos' return to being a self sufficient economy.

Has your life settled down a bit since your hippy days?

Yes, I have enjoyed my family life. I married and I have four children.  They are all studying, New York, Oxford, Italy and Athens!  They get their language skills from me!  I am very proud of them - you will see them in the summer - they will all be down here at the beach to help me.

Are you feeling confident about the season ahead?

Oh yes, friends will always come back to Lindos.  We may have seen a lot of change here in just our life time but Lindos will never lose its character and charm.  Rhodes always had a very good infrastructure which helped tourism to begin and made it such a popular place; an international airport, an international port. Rhodes has always had a good economy and will survive these difficult times.

Tell us a little bit about what your customers can enjoy down here with you.

Well, we are open every day until late evening.  We have barbecues every night, (please book your place). We will have fresh fish or meat and salads.  I enjoy tuna fishing so you will see that on the BBQ menu a lot!   We have plenty of sunbeds, shady tables and helpful staff.

We are looking forward to spending more time with you Dimitris this season, thank you for sharing your afternoon with us.
