Acropolis
Lindos is really 'two in one', a beautiful Greek village, and two, an Archaelogical site, under the protection of the Archaelogical Society. Set on the Eastern coast of Rhodes island, 55km from Rhodes Town.

Lindos was originally founded by the Dorians, who arrived on the island in about 10th century B.C. By the 8th century it was a major trading, and shipping centre, which started to decline after the foundation of the city of Rhodes in the late 5th century. In its prime, along with the other two major cities on the island, Kamiros and Ialysos, they contributed to the fleet of 1000 ships that went to fight in the Battle of Troy! I have actually heard unconfirmed rumours that Helen of Troy was exciled to Vlicha, just outside Lindos, to spend the remainder of her days, watching the sea from a distance!

The Acropolis of Lindos, is dominated by the massive temple of Athena Lindia, which attained its final form in around 300 BC. Some archaeologists say that it is actually 100 years older that the Acropolis in Athens.

In the 14th century, the Knights of St. John built a huge fortress around the Temple to defend the island from the Ottomans.

On, and on the history of this village goes, and is almost neverending. The Ancient Amphitheatre, which lies on the slope below the Acropolis seen many a 'Greek tragedy' enacted out to a wide audience.
The centre of the village is marked by the Byzantine church, which is dedicated to the Virgin Mary, and adorned with 18th century frescoes. St.Pauls bay is at the back of the village, this is where the Apostle took shelter from a severe storm, during his travels. A small chapel marks the spot, and bears his name.

Lindos is truly steeped in history and culture. A walk along some of the quiet back streets, can really throw you back in time. Thankfully Lindos is protected and all the buildings have to be standard white 'sugar cube' style, with brown shuttering and doors.

Although history is being preserved, all the modern trappings exist. When you come to this charming village, you will be experiencing life, in a living museum!
