My love affair with Lindos started in 1990 when I arrived with clipboard in hand for another season on the Greek islands working for the No 1 Greek Specialist at that time, Grecian Holidays. But, wow, I soon realized that this was not like any other island I had been to. Every Greek island has its own little bit of magic but I was cast under the spell of Lindos like no other.

Every time I walked through the maze of cobbled streets I would smile to myself and think how lucky I was to be able to call Lindos ‘home', even if it was just for the summer. Those were the days when we weren't tied to mobile phones and there was rarely even a landline out of the village. Lindos Reception didn't exist then and so without any form of communication of news of the flight arrivals nor a place to sit, we used to wait in the top car park all night. We made ourselves comfortable on the large bags of dirty laundry and gazed at the stars. In fact, this wasn't the only type of star gazing as the rich and famous also had Lindos listed as one of their favourite hot spots.

My name is Melanie Veighey-Koufos; I am from Bangor, Northern Ireland. I first came to Rhodes in July 1979. I'm just realising, that was 30 years ago this year. (I was a child... )

We chose Rhodes quite randomly, and I had certainly never heard of Lindos, so when the public bus trundled around ‘Ooh aah' corner, I thought to myself, that it had been kept a well hidden secret. Staggering off the bus in the Main Square of the village, suitcase in one hand and back pack on my shoulders, I thought, 'What now'? Lindos was quite the trendy 'in' place to be, and there wasn't a room to be had anywhere. Our first port of call was the infamous Alexis Bar, and from there we found a roof top to spend the night on, with the promise of a room the following day.
